Reading task 1 week 11

  1. Did you know that every year, people vote for their favorite New Zealand bird in the Bird of the Year competition. The bird that gets the most votes is the winner. The competition is run by Forest & Bird, an organization that helps look after New Zealand’s birds and wildlife.
  2. Why native birds ? New Zealand has 168 kinds of native birds, but most of them are in danger of becoming extinct. This means they may die out. The fairy tern, the 2014 Bird of the Year, is our most endangered bird. There are only twenty of them left. We want people to know how they can help stop native birds like the fairy tern from dying out.
  3. New Zealand birds are in danger. The biggest danger is from animals such as possums, rats, and stoats. These animals are predators. They kill the birds and eat their eggs
  4. Who can vote ? Anyone can vote. The only rule is that you can vote only once. You can vote online, by email, or by posting a letter.

I wrote four facts about the story that I chose .

I read about a book called (Bird of the year) it’s a book about are Aotearoa native birds.

I want to tell you one more fact about this book. because This is very interesting.

Bird of the Year takes place in October every year. A list of the birds that people can vote for is put up on the
Forest & Bird website. The competition gets people very excited. They make videos and posters to try to get other people to vote for their favourite bird. They write songs, make speeches, and take photos. In 2018, the prime minister asked people to vote for the black petrel. And former All Black captain Richie McCaw painted a picture of his favorite bird, the kākāriki (orange-fronted parakeet), on his helicopter!

These are the 4 most interesting facts in the book that we read for reading.

  1. Would you like to live near a watery wasteland full of rubbish? Or would you rather live near a safe haven full of birds, fish, trees, and plants? Estuaries can become either of these. That’s why kaitiakitanga, or protection, of estuaries is so important. If we don’t look after them, they can become unhealthy. And, as you’ll find out, healthy estuaries are better for everyone!
  2. An estuary is a place where fresh water from a river or stream mixes with salt water from the sea. Estuaries are different from lakes and rivers because they have tides and salty water.
  3. Estuaries look like a

There are more than three hundred estuaries in Aotearoa New Zealand. If you live near the coast, there is probably an estuary close by – like a harbor, river mouth, inlet, or lagoon. If it has a mix of freshwater and saltwater, it’s an estuary.

  1. Many birds that migrate from place to place stop at estuaries to rest and find food. Every year, kuaka (godwits) fly non-stop for eight days from Alaska to Aotearoa New Zealand. That’s a distance of 12,000 kilometers! They spend the summer feeding in our estuaries, mostly on sea worms and crabs. It must be well known that there is great kai in the estuaries of Aotearoa!
